On May 1, 2025, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, addressed concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in the agency’s operations. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Olukoyede firmly dismissed allegations that Tinubu has interfered in the it’s anti-corruption efforts, emphasizing the President’s focus on performance over political targeting.
A Commitment to Autonomy: Olukoyede stated, “Since I was appointed, the President has never called me to stop, impose, dictate, or prescribe any directive as regards the affairs of the Commission.” He praised Tinubu for providing the support needed to fulfill the it’s mandate.
EFCC And Political Motives
Olukoyede further clarified that the EFCC’s investigations, including high-profile cases, have not been swayed by political motives. He noted that more members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have been prosecuted than opposition members, countering claims of bias. This comes amidst criticisms from some quarters, including a recent accusation by former NHIS boss Professor Usman Yusuf, who alleged that the EFCC was being weaponized to silence dissent—an assertion Olukoyede strongly refuted.
The it has also taken steps to strengthen its internal integrity, with Olukoyede revealing that 27 staff members have been dismissed for infractions since he took office. He stressed that the agency’s mission remains focused on combating corruption across all sectors, supported by Tinubu’s non-interference and commitment to transparency in governance.
