A Big Win for Nigeria
The Federal Republic of Nigeria has won a major battle. The UK Court of Appeal said no to an appeal by Seamus Andrew. He was a former director of Process & Industrial Developments (P&ID). This ends a long fight over a huge $11 billion award. Nigeria can now breathe a sigh of relief.
The court made its decision today, June 11, 2025. Andrew missed the 21-day deadline to file his appeal. This gave Nigeria a clear victory. The court threw out his case. It means Nigeria does not have to pay the massive sum.
What Happened?
The trouble started years ago. In 2010, Nigeria signed a deal with P&ID. The plan was to process gas. But things went wrong. P&ID claimed Nigeria broke the deal. They took the case to arbitration. In 2017, they won $6.6 billion. With interest, it grew to $11 billion.
Nigeria fought back. They said the deal was unfair. They found evidence of fraud. The English High Court agreed in 2023. It canceled the award. Andrew tried to appeal. But he was too late. The Court of Appeal shut him down.
Why It Matters
This win is huge for Nigeria. The $11 billion is a big part of the countryβs budget. It could have hurt schools and hospitals. Now, that money stays with the people. President Tinubu called it a win for Africa. He said it stops unfair deals.
The case showed corruption. Some officials took bribes. They helped P&ID win the first award. Nigeriaβs fight proved the system can work. It sends a message. No one can cheat the country easily.
