On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the Senate confirmed the appointment of five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signaling a strategic move to bolster the commission ahead of upcoming elections. The confirmation took place during a plenary session in Abuja, following a detailed report by they’re Committee on INEC, chaired by Sen. Simon Lalong (APC-Plateau).
New Appointments: The confirmed RECs are Umar Yusuf Garba (Kano), Saβad Umar Idris (Bauchi), Chukwuemeka C. Ibeziako (Anambra), Umar Mukhtar (Borno), and Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem (Bayelsa), each set to serve a five-year term.
The Senateβs Approval
The appointments, forwarded by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, were made in line with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The Senateβs approval, backed by a voice vote, came after the committee verified the nomineesβ qualifications, experience, and integrity. Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged the new RECs to ensure fairness and transparency in their duties, emphasizing the need for credible elections.
